Because HIV by itself will hardly kill an individual directly, but likely through opportunistic infections or cancers, it is safe to say that there are certain things one can do to live a very healthy long live, even with this infection. Some of them are listed below:
- DON’T TREAT ANY ILLNESS BY SELF MEDICATION;
This is a very important, because niggling illnesses or malaise may be sign of more sinister diseases. As a rule, in medicine, the earlier an illness is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome for the individual, both in terms of survival and morbidity. In fact, some diseases like breast cancer are very treatable if caught early, but have worse prognosis if diagnosed late.
This is also true for chronic illnesses like diabetes and hypertension. The earlier they are discovered and controlled the better, to avoid any arising complications. Another good example of a very important disease for PLHIV is tuberculosis. This disease kills more than half of those that die due to AIDS worldwide, though with more incidence in sub-Saharan Africa.
It is therefore important to report to your doctor, at any sign of illness, for proper diagnosis and management.
Regular (at least yearly) checkup tests with your doctor, is also a good habit.
